16. Martyrs
One recommended by my friend Krysty, I’ve noticed this one mentioned a lot on ‘shock horror’ lists but didn’t know anything else about it!French subtitled this film follows the story of two girls who become friends after one escapes from abuse in captivity.
Martyrs has a nice depth and looks a lot more at mental abuse, with some heart breaking moments, it keeps you on your toes with new things happening just as you think the pace has died down! The film includes some extremely impressive make up work, with shot wounds, stitching up cuts and larger scale sfx moments! Its an oddly beautiful film but its defiantly not one for the faint hearted, I must say, really worth watching!!!!!!!

P.s I always love it when they reference the title in a film :-) xxxx

15. Frankenhooker
When a bio-electro-technicians’ compulsive-eater girlfriend accidentally kills herself , he sets himself the task to bringing her back to life with only her head left from the scene. This takes him to the cities sleazy underbelly of branded hookers and super crack which includes a scene of female body close up ;-)I loved the cheesy comedy feel to the film, including the oh so obvious mannequin doubles used when people explode in scenes!  And was also funny to see another monster film set in new jersey  so soon after watching Toxic Avenger ;-) With electro-sex, frankenstiens monster and perfect breasts, a terribly trashy flick for something a little silly the October :) x

14. A Nightmare on Elm Street Remake
I watched the original another year of the challenge and loved it… so was worried about watching this version!  I cant deny, Jackie Haley was a great casting choice as Freddy, he brought a new sexy and creepiness to the roll that only Robert Englund himself could beat ;-)
It had more of an aim and plot but a bit too much CGI for my taste! I enjoyed the little nods to the original such as blood in the ceiling and the odd quote here and there! The childlike feel to the original was lost a lot in this version but gave it a new grittiness! I did enjoy how it tricked the viewer to thinking characters were awake and how the setting changed well when realising they were asleep!
With a bit more background story development, the narrative really shows how the most nightmarish world can be our reality. I thought it was actually a good attempt of remaking such an iconic film (even if I prefer the original!!!)
Just remember…. don’t fall asleep…. x

13. The Toxic Avenger
Well… where to start with this one! We open in true 80s fashion, at a gym with jocks, dweebs, glamourous ladies and overly camp instructors. First 10 minutes of watching I hated it, disliking the lead alot (reminded me of a cross of water boy and napoleon dynamite… but i reallly didnt like napoleon dynamite!!!) However, as the film is pretty fast paced is progressed quickly and as our lead changed into the toxic avenger, it really gets good! It takes the worst of the 80’s and key cheesy stereotypes and boosts them up 10fold, making this film an over the top mash of well… toxic waste!
I did really love the fact that this was the first film on the list that had a woman be incharge of SFX make up! The transformation scene was done really welll and there is also a great use of fire work in the film!
There were also some funny references such as frankenstien and the blind man, nazi policeman, monster sex and yet another 80s montage! As the film ends in a perfect ‘drive through’ movie way, I was left confused as my hate for it was so strong at the start, and yet, so was my love for it by the end! Great to watch this season, it may not be a ‘horror’ but its definatly a Monster Movie!

12. Livide
I chose this film for the sheer fact I saw it in HMV and liked the cover. All I knew about it is that it was French. We open the film with life crawling out of a corpse to the most beautiful soundtrack.  The scenes is set on Halloween in a french sea side town. Lucie, a trainee carer with one blue and one brown eye is introduced to Deborah Jessel, an old dance teacher in a coma who resides in the most stunning house (that I would loveeeeeee to have!)
Certain bloody and ghostly scenes were done in much more soft and creepy way which made a great change to scream/jump factor a lot of western horror movies seem to rely on! The make up work was beautiful as well as having a lovely colour palette throughout. Filled with ballet, wtf ending moments and a taxidermy tea party, try not to go in thinking ‘horror film’ and it’ll be a brilliant watch this Halloween!!! Maybe one for those who liked De Toro’s The Orphanage. Really did love it,

11. The Monster Squad
This film tells the story of a club known as the Monster Squad, along with their trusty Beagle, try and find a way to stop Dracula and other creatures from taking over the world. The monsters created by the legened stan winston, giving us the classics of The Mummy, Frankenstiens Monster, Lagoon Creature, Wolfman (which I honestly, didnt like the facial design of at all…) and a Dracula every fancy dress costume company would be proud of! There were little nods to the original films throughout such as Frankenstiens Monster and the little girl by the water which I enjoyed! I was once told this flm was the spooky horror equivilant to The Goonies, so sadly, set my expectations high. There are deffinatly similarities between the 2 films, and not just using the same actress as the mother!I I wasn’t a overall fan of the characters, (apart from the adorable Eugene) which I think effected my overall enjoyment of the film, including a lack of character development!
Small town America, spooky house and with 80’s montages, if you want something cheesey then have a watch, you may like the characters more than me!

10. The Birds
Last time I did my Halloween challenge, I included a Alfred Hitchcock classic and having read some of Daphne Du Maurier’s work before, I was curious to see how this one would pan out!  With a cheeky, soft, gorgeous Tippi Hedren and the oh so classically handsome Roy Taylor as leads, the two definatly performed well together. I also found the teacher very familiar, only to find out it was Suzanne Pleshette (who I saw as Yubba after rewatching Spirited Away recently)! Having the story focused around one small town works well for a more gradual yet dramatic narrative. And yet, of all the birds to target Tippi , the first one to smack her was a fucking sea gull… which reminds me tooooo much of childhood in Jersey!!
The last Hitchcock film I watched was black and white so colour was interesting to see being used in places such as the brightness of the blood and the love birds swaying with the car. I was really impressed with the effects used for the birds in the living room etc. especially as I have seen more modern films with worse effects!!! It was also interesting to spot the various scenes and points that have had an obvious influence on modern film! The frantic wing movements along with with distorted bird sounds really add to the overall chaos the birds bring,  I can see why so many people I know get freaked out by birds! This also worked when using no sound at all, giving the film tension and an odd sense of realism! With an open and kind of bleak ending, I think this is a film everyone should at least watch once in their lifetime!
